Methodology

This table ranks countries by their current HDI scores and estimates when the world's most developed country (historically Norway, Canada, or Switzerland) achieved each corresponding HDI level. The years are approximations based on:

  1. Historical HDI progression of leading countries
  2. Average annual HDI growth rates (typically 0.5-1% for developed nations)
  3. The fact that HDI has grown consistently since its creation in 1990
  4. Extrapolation backwards for countries with very low current HDI scores

Key Insights:

  • Countries like South Sudan (HDI: 0.388) have development levels equivalent to what the world's most developed countries had in the late 19th century
  • The gap between most and least developed countries represents roughly 145 years of development progress
  • This visualization shows the enormous development disparities that exist in our world today

Note: Years before 1990 are extrapolated estimates, as the HDI was first calculated in 1990. The estimates assume similar development patterns would have existed if HDI had been measured earlier.
