RE: Alternative Design Proposal for Francis Scott Key Bridge Replacement
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the wake of the March 26, 2024 Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse that took six lives and devastated our community, Baltimore deserves more than just a replacement—we deserve a transformation. I respectfully submit for your consideration an alternative design that would transform this tragedy into a triumph: the Baltimore Ascendant Bridge™ in radiant gold.
While the current replacement renderings show a functional bridge, this proposal offers Baltimore something far greater: a global landmark that honors those we lost while declaring to the world that Baltimore has risen stronger, bolder, and more beautiful than ever.
WHY RECONSIDER THE CURRENT DESIGN?
The Current Moment Demands Vision
The collapse of the Key Bridge was not just an infrastructure failure—it was called a "global crisis" by Governor Moore, affecting over 8,000 jobs and causing an estimated $15 million per day in economic losses. The eyes of the world are on Baltimore's recovery.
This is our once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a bold statement.
The current replacement design is practical and safe, but it lacks the emotional and symbolic power this moment requires. We have $1.7-1.9 billion in federal funding committed—why not invest in a design that returns tenfold in tourism, pride, and global recognition?
THE BALTIMORE ASCENDANT BRIDGE™ VISION
Built on Sacred Ground
This is where America proved unbreakable.
On September 13-14, 1814, Francis Scott Key witnessed the British Royal Navy bombard Fort McHenry through the night—right here in Baltimore Harbor. Through "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air," he watched. And when dawn came, the American flag STILL FLEW. From that moment of resilience, Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner"—our National Anthem.
210 years later, in these same waters, tragedy struck again. The Key Bridge collapse. Six workers lost. The port paralyzed.
But just like 1814, Baltimore will rise again—stronger, bolder, more magnificent than before.
The Baltimore Ascendant Bridge™ honors both moments: the birth of our National Anthem, and our modern determination to rebuild with American strength and ingenuity.
A Design That Tells Our Story
The flowing, wave-inspired golden arches represent:
- Rising from the Patapsco: The bridge emerges from the water like a phoenix, symbolizing Baltimore's resilience
- The Six Lives Lost: Each major arch honors the construction workers who died—Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, Maynor Yasir Suazo-Sandoval, Carlos Hernandez, Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, and Jose Mynor Lopez
- Golden Strength: Gold represents the unbreakable spirit of Baltimore—we were struck down but we rise more magnificent than before
- Port City Heritage: The nautical, flowing design celebrates our 300+ year history as a maritime gateway

Why Gold? Why Now?
Gold is not a luxury—it's a necessity for what Baltimore needs to achieve:
- Global Tourism Magnet: A golden bridge with world-leading light shows would instantly become one of the most photographed structures on Earth, drawing millions of visitors and generating hundreds of millions in economic activity. Imagine nightly light shows rivaling the Eiffel Tower's displays.
- Technology Showcase: This bridge would be a living demonstration of American innovation—featuring the best technology from our allies worldwide, integrated into a singular American masterpiece. Every visitor would see what's possible when engineering meets artistry.
- Honoring the Fallen: The workers who died deserved more than a standard replacement. They deserve a monument that ensures their sacrifice is never forgotten—a gleaming golden bridge with programmable memorial light displays on significant dates, rising from the waters where our National Anthem was born
- 24/7 Spectacle: Unlike traditional bridges that are beautiful by day, the Baltimore Ascendant Bridge™ would be MORE spectacular at night—transforming into a living light sculpture visible from planes, satellites, and across the city
- American Resurrection Story: Just as Key watched the flag survive British bombardment in 1814, the world will watch Baltimore build a golden bridge that declares: AMERICA BUILDS THE IMPOSSIBLE. AMERICA BUILDS TO LAST. AMERICA IS BACK.
- Economic Recovery Accelerator: Baltimore needs more than infrastructure—we need an economic revival. A landmark bridge with nightly light shows drives repeat tourism, special events, and continuous media coverage
- Manufacturing Renaissance: This bridge will be MADE IN USA—from the titanium cladding to the stainless steel, from the LED systems to the smart sensors. We're bringing back American manufacturing dominance, one bridge at a time.
RESPONDING TO THE REALITY
Addressing the Current Timeline
I understand the urgency to complete the replacement by fall 2028. However, I respectfully submit that we should ask ourselves:
Would it be worth extending the timeline by 6-12 months if it means Baltimore gets a 100-year landmark instead of a 100-year bridge?
The difference in long-term economic impact would be measured in billions of dollars over the bridge's lifetime through tourism, development, and global media exposure.
Cost Considerations
Yes, this design would likely exceed the current budget. But consider:
- Federal infrastructure funding is at historic highs
- Private investment would be attracted to adjacent development
- Naming rights and sponsorships for individual arches or features
- Tourism revenue would offset costs within 5-10 years
- Economic development would generate massive tax revenue
The question isn't "can we afford this?" but rather "can we afford NOT to seize this moment?"

A BRIDGE WORTHY OF THE MOMENT
The Key Bridge collapse was a tragedy. The birth of our National Anthem in these same waters was a triumph.
From tragedy can come transformation. From loss, legacy. From collapse, ascension.
We can build a replacement, or we can build a masterpiece that honors BOTH moments in Baltimore Harbor's history.
We can rebuild what was lost, or we can create something that declares to the world: AMERICAN ENGINEERING IS UNMATCHED. AMERICAN MANUFACTURING IS BACK. AMERICAN RESILIENCE IS ETERNAL.
The current design shows functional towers and standard spans. The Baltimore Ascendant Bridge™ would have superior functionality—wrapped in a design so stunning, so technologically advanced, so unmistakably AMERICAN that it would redefine Baltimore's place not just nationally, but globally.
Built with American steel. Coated with American titanium. Lit with American innovation. Engineered to outlast everything.
This is Baltimore's moment. This is America's moment. Let's make it GOLDEN.

"O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
In 1814, Francis Scott Key asked that question as dawn broke over Fort McHenry.
The answer was YES. The flag still flew. America survived.
In 2025, we ask: Will Baltimore rise from tragedy with a bridge worthy of where our National Anthem was born?
The answer must be YES.
